How to tell fin rot from ordinary fin damage, what causes it, and why clean stable water does most of the work before any medication.

Fin rot is the condition betta keepers see most, and it is almost always a symptom of something else.

The bacteria involved live in most aquariums harmlessly. They take hold when the fish is already compromised: by ammonia in the water, by being cold for weeks, by an injury, or by living somewhere too small and too stressful. Treating the bacteria without fixing that is treating the wrong thing.

Rot or damage?

This distinction decides what you do next, and it is not always clear.

Treating it

The parts we can state plainly:

Move the fish to a bare-bottom hospital tank if you are medicating, since many treatments kill your filter bacteria and harm snails and shrimp. Keep the temperature stable in the normal range rather than raising it, because heat speeds bacterial growth too. Do daily partial water changes. Remove activated carbon from the filter, or it will adsorb the medication.

The part we will not state: a dosage. Products differ by formulation and concentration, and a number from the internet applied to the bottle in your hand is how fish get overdosed. Follow the instructions on the product, and if you are unsure which product is appropriate, that is a question for an aquatic vet rather than a forum.

Treat one thing at a time. Combining medications is a common way to lose a fish that fin rot alone would not have killed.

Recovery

Progression should stop within a few days once the water is right. That is the first milestone and it matters more than appearance.

Regrowth follows, and it looks odd. New fin tissue often comes in clear or much paler than the original, and the shape may not return to what it was, particularly on a halfmoon or crowntail. That is cosmetic.

Timescale is weeks to months. A long-finned fish regrowing substantial area is slow, and slow is fine. What is not fine is continued recession in clean water, which means the treatment is not working and the plan needs revisiting.

Preventing a recurrence

Fin rot that comes back is telling you the underlying cause was never addressed.

Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero, which means a genuinely cycled tank tested weekly. Hold the temperature steady rather than letting the room decide it. Replace plastic plants with silk, since stiff plastic tears long fins. Baffle strong flow. Give the fish enough space, which means five gallons at an absolute minimum. And remove a tank mate that is nipping, because no medication outpaces a fish being bitten daily.
