How to Test Betta Tank Water: A Practical Walkthrough

Which kit to buy, how to run each test without misreading it, how often, and what to do with the numbers once you have them.

Every troubleshooting guide on this site starts with the same instruction: test the water first. This is the page that explains how to do it without getting a wrong answer.

What to buy

A liquid master test kit covering ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. That is the whole purchase.

Skip the strips. They are convenient and they fail at the one job that matters, which is distinguishing zero ammonia from a small amount of ammonia. A betta is being harmed at 0.25 ppm, and a strip cannot reliably tell you the difference between that and nothing at all. A liquid kit runs several hundred tests, so the cost per test is lower anyway.

Add a separate GH and KH kit if your pH refuses to sit still. Most keepers never need it.

That last row causes some genuinely baffling results. Vials washed in the kitchen sink hold enough residue to throw a test off, and the effect persists.

Running the tests

The instructions in the box are correct and people skip parts of them anyway. The four steps that get skipped:

  1. Hold the reagent bottle vertical and let drops fall on their own. Squeezing at an angle changes the drop size and therefore the dose.
  2. Count the drops out loud. Losing count is the second most common source of a nonsense reading.
  3. Cap the vial and invert it, rather than stirring or swirling.
  4. Wait the full stated time before reading. Ammonia and nitrate both need several minutes, and a colour read early is a colour read wrong.

For nitrate specifically: shake the second reagent bottle hard for the full time stated, then shake the capped vial hard for the full time stated. It feels excessive. It is not. Under-shaking makes nitrate read far lower than it is, which is why some people believe a tank with no water changes has no nitrate.

Reading the result

Do not read under aquarium lighting, which is usually blue-shifted enough to move a colour a whole step. Do not read against a coloured worktop. Do not read against the tank itself.

If a colour sits between two blocks on the chart, record the worse of the two. Rounding in your own favour is how a slow problem stays invisible.

Same time of day each week. Ammonia rises after feeding and falls again, so a Saturday morning reading and a Wednesday evening reading are not comparable.

Write it down

A phone note with four columns beats memory completely. Date, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate.

One reading tells you the state of the tank. A column of readings tells you the direction it is moving in, which is the part that lets you act before the fish is affected. Nitrate creeping from 10 to 20 to 30 over three weeks is a maintenance answer, and you cannot see it from a single test.

What to do with the numbers

Ammonia or nitrite above zero means change water now and keep changing it daily. Nitrate climbing past about 20 ppm means bigger or more frequent changes. pH moving noticeably week to week usually means low KH rather than anything you should treat.
